Crashes are dark and downright forceful, open with blast of high frequencies which slice through, giving impressive projection, the opening brightness nips back quickly but lingers on within deeper - and still penetrating even while subsiding - decay. Heavily inspired by a ride which was given to Wallace Roney by the late, great Tony Williams that Lenny used to play while working with Wallace, Epoch Rides with unusual and attractive shape, are deep, earthy and fairly trashy, depending on where is played, they produce some quite distinct tones: near the bell they are dark while on the shoulder they are actually brighter, and beyond the hooked edge they are mysteriously oriental and thinner. Hats are bright and cutting yet at the same time warm and full-bodied defying such conventions, produce delicious blend of deep, earthy tones beneath the sizzling attack. Stepping gives hats fat chick while laying into them with relaxed pedal foot leaves them fizzing with enthusiasm.
