"If there were a fire in my house and I had only one chance to escape with some precious belongings, my Istanbul Agop 20: Traditional Dark Ride would certainly be on the list of salvation. This cymbal has been crucial to the development of my own playing style in the past year or so. It feels weird to say a single cymbal made such a large impact, but itâs definitely true. Itâs one of the most versatile pieces of equipment a drummer can buy. Dark cymbals in general are pretty versatile: play them with the tip of the drumstick and youâll get a wonderfully defined tone thatâs both crisp and washy. Whack them with the side of the drumstick and dark rides become large crash cymbals due to their thin profiles. Some drummers donât even use crash cymbals, just various dark rides. Dark cymbals, like the Agop Traditional cover a vast spectrum of volume. Whatâs more, these cymbals articulate at every volume. Even when really rocking, individual cymbal hits resonate in quick punches followed by loud washes. And, when playing very lightly, the sound is incredibly pleasant.
